The year 2021 can be considered as one of the most anticipated years of all time; mostly because it puts an end to the unprecedented year 2020 and the Covid-19 crisis (hopefully!), but partly for what’s in stock for the movie lovers, especially the Marvel fans: the Phase 4 of Marvel Cinematic Universe. The upcoming Marvel movies and shows in 2021 have been creating a huge buzz and excitement among the audience ever since their announcement.
The American media franchise company is leaving no stones unturned when it comes to diversifying its reach beyond theatres and Television by leveraging OTT platform. With WandaVision, The Falcon & the Winter Soldier and Loki series set to release on Disney+ and the Black Widow in theatres, MCU intends to dominate 2021 by releasing movies and shows one after the other and make up for the disruption in its 2020 calendar.
She-Hulk, Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, Hawkeye and Spider-Man 3 are at the centre of MCU’s 2021 Phase 4 releases.
Here is the list of upcoming Marvel movies and shows in 2021.
LOKI miniseries is expected to come to Disney+ in May 2021. Tom Hiddleston will return to play the character of Loki a.k.a The God of Mischief. The cast of the limited series includes Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in key roles.
The plot of the series picks off from Avengers: The Endgame, where Loki unexpectedly manages to make a slip using the Space Stone, which he comes across accidentally. The trailer of the series indicates the presence of time travel angle along with some of the obvious angles, such as comedy, tragedy, sarcasm and more, which are natural when it comes to the character, Loki.
BLACK WIDOW (MOVIE)
The Black Window is one of the most anticipated and long overdue Marvel movies from MCU. After hassling through various release dates, the movie is set to release in the theatres on May 7, 2021. The movie stars Scarlett Johansson (Need we say more for you to go watch the movie when it releases!) in the lead role as Natasha Romanoff with David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle, and Rachel Weisz playing the key roles.
This action-packed film, which was scheduled to hit the theatres in 2020, got postponed in the wake of the global pandemic and production delays. The storyline greatly deals with Natasha Romanoff’s past, where the protagonist returns to her native land to set things right from her past life and reconciles with her “family”.
WandaVision is one of the Marvel shows to look forward to in the year 2021. The series is set to reach the audience via Disney+ and stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as Wanda Maximoff – a.k.a. the Scarlet Witch – and Vision, respectively.
During D23 Expo, the story writer Jac Schaeffer said the show will be “half-sitcom” and “half MCU adventure”, which is clearly evident from the recently released trailers.
SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS (MOVIE)
The movie is based on Marvel’s 1970s comic book The Hands of Shang-Chi: Master of Kung-Fu. Hassling back and forth on the release date between May 7, 2021, and July 9, 2021, the movie is finally scheduled to release on the latter date.
The story is about one Shang-Chi who uses his martial arts skills to fight his father and other villains after learning about his father’s wrongful business. The cast includes Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Awkwafina, and Tony Leung.
Confirmed in the 2019 D23 Expo, Hawkeye had to go through a lot of uncertainty to hit the bullseye of production in November 2020. The series is set to stream on Disney+ platform in 2021.
The plot of the story revolves around one of the Avengers, Clint Barton played by Jeremy Renner, training the new Hawkeye, Kate Bishop. Directed by Amber Finlayson and Katie Ellwood, the cast of the series include Vera Farmiga, Alaqua Cox, Hailee Steinfeld, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, and Zahn McClarnon.
THE ETERNALS (MOVIE)
The Eternals has already created a huge hype among the audience with its cast, which includes Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, Lauren Ridloff, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Lia McHugh, Don Lee, and Kit Harington. The upcoming Marvel movie is expected to release in theatres on November 5, 2021.
Based on the comic book Eternals, the film introduces a race of the oldest and most powerful creatures in the universe, Eternals, created by the Celestials to harness cosmic energy. The story revolves around one Eternal named Seri, played by Gemma Chan, who possesses powers of flight, strength, immortality and molecular manipulation.
THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER (SERIES)
The series stars Anthony Mackie as Sam and Sebastian Stan as Bucky in the lead roles and is expected to come to Disney+ in March 2021. The series also stars Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter and Daniel Brühl as Zemo. The story revolves around Bucky trying to synchronize with the mainstream society while Sam strives to live up to Captain America’s expectations when he receives the Shield from the Captain.
SPIDER-MAN 3 (MOVIE)
There is no better way to end the list of upcoming Marvel movies and shows in 2021 than with Spider-Man 3!
Initially set to release on July 16, 2021, Spider-Man 3’s release was later postponed to December 17, 2021. Hom Holland and Zendaya return to their respective roles of Peter Parker and Mary Jane in this third instalment of Spider-Man of its series. Alfred Molina joined the cast to reprise his role of Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man 2, which starred Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man.
