Disney Moves “Mulan” Release to Late August

Mulan

Looks like the Disney fans will have to wait a few days longer to watch their favorite warrior princess “Mulan!” Disney has moved the release date of the much-awaited live action movie for the third time, owing to the surge of Coronavirus cases across the world. Originally set for a worldwide release on March 27, 2020, it was slated to hit the screens on July 24, 2020. Mulan will now be released in the theatres on August 21, 2020.

The Walt Disney studios’ co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn and co-chairman Alan Bergman said in a statement, “While the pandemic has changed our release plans for ‘Mulan’ and we will continue to be flexible as conditions require, it has not changed our belief in the power of this film and its message of hope and perseverance.” They further added that the director Niki Caro, the cast and crew have made a beautiful, epic and moving film that is everything how a cinematic experience it should be and that it belongs on the world stage and the big screen for audiences around the globe to enjoy together.

Directed by Niki Caro, “Mulan” stars Liu Yifei in the lead role and is made on a whopping budget of $200 million. Just like its animated counterpart, the live action movie follows the story of a warrior who disguises herself as a man in a bid to spare her elderly father from serving in the military and how she bravely overcame the odds. It is the first live-action Disney movie to be rated PG-13 because of the heavy sequences of violence.

Disney has also pushed back the production of several of its upcoming projects, including “Indiana Jones 5”, “The Eternals” and “Jungle Cruise”, in the past few months due to the outbreak of the pandemic. As production of movies and series have come to a halt across the world, some of these movies might not have been ready for release in the theatres as per the schedule.

The decision was taken in light of the recent announcement by Warner Bros. about the release of “Tenet.” The release of the Christopher Nolan-directorial has been postponed, for the third time, to August 12.
