9 Upcoming Disney Live-action Movie Remakes

Disney fans are living the dream as Disney has been announcing various live-action movie remakes. After making millions of dollars on remakes, Disney doesn’t seem to be stopping with the live-action movie remake train anytime soon. In 2019 itself, Disney released The Lion King, Dumbo, Aladdin, and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.

Currently, most of the remakes are either complete live-action adaptations of the classics or they seed from the classic characters. Regardless of the adaptation type, Disney seems to have a solid plan for their future. As per the plan, some of the remakes are heading to the theatre while the others are being released on the Disney+ streaming service.

Excited yet?! Here is a list of all the Disney live-action movies that are in some stage of production.

Mulan 

The 1998 classic was remade into a live-action movie with actress Liu Yifei as the lead character. The movie was directed by Niki Caro and was originally due to be released on March 27, 2020, However, Mulan has now been postponed due to the novel Coronavirus outbreak.

The 1998 classic is about a young Chinese girl, Mulan, who cleverly impersonates a man to join the Chinese military. The story revolves around her & her dragon warding off a Hun invasion, while falling in love with a commander.

Cruella

Cruella is a new spin on the classic 101 Dalmatians Story, with Emma Stone playing the younger version of Cruella de Vil. The movie, which is revealed to have a punk vibe, is being directed by Craig Gillespie. The film also stars Emma Thompson, whose role in the movie is yet to be revealed. If things go as planned, Cruella is said to hit the theatres on May 28, 2021.

Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs

Disney is currently said to be working on making a live-action movie adaptation of Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs. The classic fairy tale follows the story of a beautiful young princess who seeks shelter at the home of seven dwarfs while being stalked by a jealous queen. According to various reports, the movie is said to have music by Oscar-winning songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Marc Webb is said to direct the upcoming live-action movie.

The Little Mermaid 

The Little Mermaid remake was one of the several movies whose production has been halted amidst the coronavirus outbreak. Although filming has not started yet, it was scheduled to begin in April at Pinewood Studios in London. Due to the pandemic, the finer details about the production and the release date are still unclear.

On a brighter note, composer Alan Menken said that all the songs for the remake have already been recorded. Disney also announced that the 19-year-old singer Halle Bailey will be playing the lead role of Ariel.

The Jungle Book 2 

The sequel to the original live-action remake “The Jungle Book” was under the talks even before the movie was released. The remake grossed nearly $1 billion at the box office. According to a few reports, Jon Favreau is expected to return as the director for “The Jungle Book 2”. However, there is no date set for the movie release yet.

Peter Pan 

David Lowery, the director of “Pete’s Dragon” will be directing the new Peter Pan adaptation. Various sources confirm that the new Disney movie stars Alexander Molony as Peter Pan & Ever Anderson as Wendy. There is currently no confirmation on whether the film will be released in theatres or on Disney+ streaming channel. We all love the 2003 version of Peter Pan, so regardless of when and where it will be initially released, the mere news of another live-action movie adaptation has got fans across the globe excited.

Pinocchio

Pinocchio is another live-action movie which is said to hit e theatres soon. According to rumors an Oscar-winning director, Robert Zemeckis, is said to directing the movie. Robert Zemeckis is also set to co-write the movie with Chris Weitz. The casting of the movie is still being determined. The original 1940 Disney animated classic, Pinocchio follows the life of a wooden puppet who gets brought to life by a fairy and must do good deeds to become a real boy. So far, there have been several live-action movie remakes of Pinocchio. However, we all know no one can produce a movie better than Disney.

Lilo & Stitch 

As we all might already know that Lilo & Stitch is about a young girl and her weird looking alien friend Stitch. Disney never disappoints fans with their remakes as they always manage to bring and retain the flavor of their animated classics into live-action movies with their spectacular visual effects. However, there is a lot of curiosity around how they will manage to make Stitch look in a live-action remake. Rumors have it that the remake might, in fact, be a horror movie as it is being written by Mike Van Waes.

Prince Charming 

Cinderella is a classic princess story that everyone has heard of across generations. The recent live-action movie was also a huge success at the box-office. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is now aiming to make a new Cinderella spinoff movie that narrates the story from the prince’s point of view. According to rumors, the movie is said to be directed by Stephen Chbsoky who is popularly known for directing “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”.
